Why I Still Love Destiny 2 (Even When I Don’t)

Destiny 2—yeah, that game—is one of my all-time favorites. The community swings between love and rage, and I’ve felt both: yelling in frustration when booted mid-strike, then logging back in hours later. Despite its flaws, I still love it.

Destiny 2 Launch

The game opened with a bang. The Red Legion attacked the Last City. We lost our Light and power, fought through the ruins, defeated Ghaul, and reclaimed what was ours. Cinematics were great, new characters had potential, and the environments were beautiful. But after the campaign, the mix of Adventures, Public Events, Nightfalls, Lost Sectors, Crucible, Trials of the Nine, and Leviathan Raid felt like a buffet—fun, but repetitive. Rewards often underwhelmed.

Nightfalls & XP Issues

Nightfalls in Destiny 1 were challenging and strategic. In Destiny 2, timed objectives turned them into speedruns, skipping fights and rushing bosses. For me, it stripped away the soul of the experience. The XP controversy didn’t help: throttled gains and misleading boosts felt shady, frustrating players and undermining trust.

The Curse of Osiris DLC

The DLC added a story, Heroic Adventures, and a new Public Event on Mercury. The Infinite Forest was fascinating in theory but repetitive in practice. Characters like Osiris and Sagira appeared briefly and disappeared, leaving a sense of missed potential. Gear rewards were limited, with one exotic armor piece and no exotic weapons yet.

Why I Keep Playing

Despite frustrations, I love Destiny. Bungie needs to address XP issues, deepen endgame content, and enrich the lore for veteran players. The universe is compelling, and the potential is still there—it just needs unlocking.

Final Thoughts

Slinky525 and I finished the Curse of Osiris campaign in about 3.5 hours, plus Adventures. Gear rewards were modest, but the story and gameplay still shine. I’d recommend Destiny 2 with caveats: new players might start with Destiny 1, and veterans should know what to expect. Here’s hoping Bungie finds the Light.
