I played CTR a few times, but only if I had someone to play against – which wasn’t often because, as far as I know, none of my friends played & my kids moved on to other games, so did I. But now with this remaster, it was time to race my way to high anxiety once again! *LOL*
Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled
CTR: Nitro-Fueled, like the original CTR from 1999, has the offbeat Crash Bandicoot and his crew of outlandish friends & enemies as they work together to stop the villainous Nitros Oxide from taking over the world. I haven’t played many racing games, but this is one of my favorites, even with some frustrating moments.
Crashing into walls, getting slaughtered by items that I hadn’t seen before, issues with the power slides, and driving off the track and over the edge of the ‘track’ (okay, the last one is on me). Instead of anxiety, I was mad – not crazy mad, but mad mad. I usually laugh crap like that away, but it was really making me mad. However, after the first five or so races, I got back in the swing of things, and didn’t drive off of the track … as much. 🙂
There’s a single player adventure mode, with the 18 original tracks, available to play in this mode and is broken down into mini-worlds. The game is linear in the beginning, but once you win and get first place in that world, you unlock the chance to beat the world’s boss in a race. If you beat the boss, you get a key to open up different races to get more collectibles.
Adventure mode is a great way to unlock and obtain more collectibles, if you want to rush through and defeat and challenge Nitros Oxide right away (you will have to challenge him twice anyway). You can also take your time and check out the different race types, which is what I opted to do because that’s how I roll … XD.
You can also select the difficulty you want to play on in Adventure Mode, or you can play in classic mode. Classic mode is a little more unyielding with the layout, you aren’t able to change your character out after you select it, and you there’s no vehicle customization.
Along with the regular three lap races, there’s also CTR challenges and Relic Races – which are needed for the endgame content. In the regular races, you’ll need to win the race and collect the letters CTR, which are in some pretty out of the way places. You may have to take a once around the track to and see where they’re located.
My Rating 4/5 ★★★★
I like Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled more than other kart racing games because I prefer the characters, graphics, tracks, and race mechanics better. The difficulty selection provides more of a challenge for the player that likes that sort of punishment … XD
