On 1 October 2019, Bungie released the newest DLC to Destiny 2, Shadowkeep as well as New Light. With those releases came the news of Bungie’s future plans for a new game.

IGN Interviews CEO Pete Parsons

IGN interviewed Bungie’s CEO Pete Parsons, who revealed that the new game is an effort to become a multi-franchise entertainment company. It’s a huge move, but Parsons has a plan to make it happen. The studio will keep the Destiny series as a main focus with Parsons saying that, “By 2025 we have a pretty specific path to make sure we transform Destiny and that we have other franchises within the marketplace.”

“We feel really confident about our ability to transform the Destiny business,” Parsons says, “and I think people are seeing that in the [Year 3 ViDoc], and in our ability to bring it to the marketplace globally. And we still have tons of work to do on that front.”

“We need to build our publishing group, but part of our vision is also to become a multi-franchise entertainment company,” he said.

Parsons didn’t give any details about the potential new franchises, but said that they planned to branch out from the MMO series from the MMO series for awhile now. The Chinese company, NetEase, gave Bungie $100 million, which could help Bungie establish one or more internal development teams, besides the one working on Destiny.

Nothing more is known (except by Bungie) about seasons 9 through 11 at the moment, besides each one will evolve the Shadowkeep story. Bungie promises to deliver an ending to the yearlong story in season 11, something Bungie hasn’t normally done in the past.

What About Destiny?

Bungie has no plans of neglecting Destiny 2, they’ve made a five year plan for Shadowkeep. With such a long-term plan in place, the question at hand is if there will be a Destiny 3? And if there is, how long will it be until it comes out? If Bungie keeps the updates to Destiny 2/Shadowkeep makes sure things stay interesting, I doubt many will be complaining – I certainly won’t be.

With the idea of having Destiny in my life for a long time, I’m quite the happy girl.
